The Stories We Tell: Seeing Beyond the Situation

'Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst." - John 4:13-14

When Jesus met the woman at the well, He saw someone others overlooked. He treated her as a person worth noticing and her story changed.

At Star Rock Ministries, we see stories like that unfold through camp.

This month, that story comes from a program that SRM made possible inside a detention center through our partnership with Modern Abolition. Here, camp had to be reimagined. Over four days, small groups rotated through recreation, creative activities, Scripture, prayer, and conversation.

Youth who spend most days in the same routines suddenly had something different to look forward to. Laugher filled the room during games, and for a few hours the ordinary rhythm of detention gave way to something new. In the middle of it all, campers heard a powerful truth: you are still a child of God.

One young woman experienced that message in a unique way.

This camp shirt was designed by a youth in a detention facility as part of a program made possible through a partnership with SRM.

In the weeks leading up to camp, she met with the ministry leader to explore the theme rooted in Scripture: we are created to create. Together they talked about her artistic gifts and what it might look like to use them in the future.

By the third meeting, she was developing a design proposal.

Her final project? Creating the theme and artwork for the camp shirts.

For someone who had been told her past defined her future, this was a turning point. Someone saw her gifts. Someone invested in her growth. And she began to imagine a different story for her life.

Relationships made that possible, including the commitment of Modern Abolition's CEO who now serves as chaplain at the Youth Detention Facility. Building consistent, caring relationships creates trust, opens doors for growth, and shows young people they are valued beyond their circumstances.

Because of the positive impact of this camp and partnership last summer, an even greater number of camp programs are now being planned for 2026, camps designed to help shape, heal, and equip these youth for the future.

That's the power of camp.

In spaces like these, young people encounter Christ in ways that grow faith, rebuild relationships, strengthen character, and begin developing life skills for the future.

And it happens through partnership.

When you give to Star Rock Ministries, you help create experiences where young people, sometimes in the most unexpected places, discover they are seen, valued, and deeply loved by God.

Thank you for being part of the story.
